Talking with Young Kids About Gender

It is hard enough trying to understand the shifting landscape of gender as an adult. Trying to discuss it with you child can feel overwhelming. The result is that we often simply avoid talking about the topic at all. What does it look and sound like to engage a child in age-appropriate conversations about gender? What is too much information? Can young kids really understand this complex subject? This workshop will address these questions as well as concrete examples and opportunities to practice using various approaches for discussing gender with kids.


Julia Beers

Julia Beers teaches second and third grade at Malcolm X Elementary in Berkeley, Ca. She received her Masters of Education at Mills College with a focus on gender inclusive schools. She serves as a Welcoming Schools teacher leader, working to protect the rights of and celebrate LGBT students and families. 

Pamela Wool

Director of Family Services and Administration, Gender Spectrum
Pamela Wool, Director of Family Services and Administration, facilitates the Gender Spectrum support groups for parents/caregivers and provides support to Gender Spectrum families throughout the year. She has been involved in gender-related issues since earning her B.A. in Women’s Studies at Brown University.
